It Runs in the Family

Put on your new nature, and be renewed as you learn to know your Creator and become like him. Colossians 3:10 (NLT)

As believers, God’s Spirit within us causes a strong desire to function more like Him in every way—not only morally, but in the areas of our health, finances, peace, joy and love too. Now, notice I did not say to be God, but to function like Him.

Functioning like God doesn’t mean you have to grow a beard or wear a flowing robe, the way He is sometimes illustrated in pictures. That is not what today’s verse is talking about. It means that through an increasingly mature relationship with our Heavenly Father, we truly begin to comprehend our identity in Him, and His reflection in our lives becomes more evident.

Think about it. Heaven is full of fantastic music, gorgeous architecture, perfect health, mind-blowing love, and awe-inspiring beauty everywhere. There is no lack of prosperity, peace, or joy! Within every believer’s spirit is the power of God, pushing them toward excellence in areas that matter to Him, too. That means if you’re musically talented, play! If you’re in business, build! If you’re in education, teach and raise others.

For example, if you are an artistic person, you feel alive when you can be creative. As God’s child, your Heavenly Father’s creative DNA is in you. After all, God loves to create! So, applying your creativity not only brings God glory but reflects your Father in you. As God’s excellence rises within us, we can’t help but desire to become more like Him!
