Are You Searching For True Freedom?

June 27, 2021

For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him. Philippians 2:13 (NLT)

Is willpower enough to conquer sin? Many of us wrestle to overcome negative emotions, habitually toxic thought patterns or addictions. We might struggle to move past mistakes we’ve made or fight to control envy, anxiety, or an explosive temper.

Struggling to beat sin using sheer willpower is one rough ride. Most people who try, don’t believe they’ll genuinely experience freedom. Why? Because while willpower is essential and valuable, it doesn’t free us on the inside. For example, if you’re addicted to alcohol and you stop drinking, internally you might still crave it so bad that it consumes your thoughts daily. That’s not freedom!

The minute we feel disappointed or have a lousy day, what do we fall back on? Whatever pleasure is familiar—right or wrong. God never designed us to handle life on willpower alone. He created us to live full, rewarding lives in Him!

When we allow Him to work within us, He works on two things. The first is realigning our will and desires with His. And secondly, He helps guide our lives in the right direction through His empowerment.

Now, that doesn’t mean the addictions, habits or consequences instantly disappear. But as Holy Spirit works within you, you’ll discover that the appeal of those addictions, thought patterns or toxic people begin to lose their hold. His strength will fuel your ability to move away from them and gravitate toward desiring His best for you instead.

When struggling with sin and temptation, dig into God’s Word. You’ll find His grace and power at work, leading you to true, lasting freedom!
