We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ. 2 Corinthians 10:5 (ESV)
Have you ever had a thought that just won’t leave you alone?
One of the enemy’s tricks is to keep pestering you with a nagging thought to see if you will accept it and begin to tear yourself down.
Let’s say every time you look in the mirror, the same little negative thought jabs you: “Look at you. Who would want to love you? You’re pathetic.” Even if that idea does not penetrate, it will get annoying after a while. Today’s scripture says, “Why are you letting that thought chip away at you? Take it captive! Destroy it!”
It reminds me of shows I’ve watched about the Allies in World War II. During interviews, soldiers would often explain how when they came upon the enemy, they would yell, “Halt!” and immediately give them one option: obedience. When they took an enemy captive, it was non-negotiable and no-nonsense. Yet how often do we allow the enemy’s questionable thoughts or hurtful ideas to nag us while we just bat them away like annoying flies? They intend to destroy us and should be treated like hostile adversaries.
So if the same unwise suggestion or harassing idea won’t stop badgering you, don’t allow it to continue—take it prisoner. Force it to admit God’s Word is truth. Speak the Word back to it and give it one option: obedience.
Maybe you’re thinking, “That sounds like a lot of work.” It’s far less painful than allowing your thought life to become the enemy’s playground. The reward for your efforts will be more than worth it!
