In addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil. Ephesians 6:16 (NLT)
You’re probably pretty certain about the colour of your eyes. Someone would have a hard time convincing you that your eyes are blue if you know they’re brown. But if they try to convince you of something you’re unsure about, it’s a different story.
If the thought, I’m a failure, pops up and you aren’t confident that you’re an overcomer through Christ, you just might accept that lie. And if you keep thinking about it, it will begin to affect how you act.
This is how the enemy works. He pops little thoughts into your mind, but these lies can’t take root unless you think about, receive and believe the lies. And you can actively combat his lies with God’s Word.
Sometimes people don’t recognize when the devil is doing this because he does it in the first person. If the thought, “You are a loser,” pops into your mind, you’d recognize that in a minute, but if you think, “I’m a loser,” you might assume it’s coming from your own mind. You could spend a few days thinking about a little thought like that before realizing you’re supposed to be combatting it with the truth of God’s Word.
Studying God’s promises will cause you to recognize when the thoughts that pop into your head are based on lies, but don’t get worried or fearful about it. Just put out those little fiery darts with your shield of faith. Remind yourself of who you really are and fight back with your sword: God’s Word (v. 17). Learn, then claim, what God says about you and what He promised you!
