DON’T JUST FIX YOUR OUTER WORLD

June 2, 2022

I lie awake thinking of you, meditating on you through the night. Psalm 63:6 (NLT)

If you don’t begin to cultivate your inner world, you will spend your life trying to fix everything on the outside. You’ll focus on questions like, “How can I handle two kids when I’m struggling with one? How do I balance time for my career, marriage, kids and health? How will I ever get all of my bills paid?”

These are all questions that deal with your outer world. In reality, they’re easy to handle if you have your inner work done! I can show you people handling ten times more with peace and joy. But this rest doesn’t just come from developing good time management skills. It all starts with how you’ve handled your inner life.

If you want greater peace, joy, power and capacity, you need to make time to persuade your heart of all that God has promised you. In centuries past, people naturally had meditation time. They’d be out ploughing the fields, taking care of livestock, washing clothes or baking bread from sun-up to sun-down, which gave them a lot of thinking time.

They didn’t have the distractions we have today. They worked hard physically but had more time to meditate.

Today, we live in a busy world filled with things that keep our attention occupied. We have to be more intentional about creating meditation time.

Think about your schedule today and set aside a daily time to meditate. The Psalmist in our verse today meditated in bed and during his night watches. Other verses talk about meditating day and night, which could suggest having a morning and a nighttime meditation. Determine what works for you and then stick to it!
