Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life. Proverbs 4:23 (NLT)
We’ve all learned the importance of a good attitude. We also know that a positive outlook can be easy to fake when things are going well. However, when the pressure hits, attitudes show their true colours.
This is because our attitudes stem from our deepest, inner beliefs of the heart. To keep a positive attitude even when things are rough, your beliefs need to line up with the positivity you’re putting out.
We’ve been on a series discussing three steps to developing a great attitude: choose, refuse and expect. First, you need to choose to have a good attitude because only you control your approach to life. Second, refuse to allow other people or circumstances to mess with your good attitude. And third: expect good things to happen.
Attitude is about expectancy. People with good attitudes believe that the best will happen and people with bad attitudes generally expect the worst. In either case, people tend to get what they expect.
So expect good things! Attitudes are like magnets—they pull your life in a direction whether you like it or not. This is why Proverbs 4:23 warns you to guard your heart because your outlook “determines the course of your life” (NLT).
What do you expect in life? If there’s an area of your life you feel hopeless or negative about, it’s time to work on your beliefs in that area. Even if you find yourself surrounded by negativity, don’t let it influence you. Rise above it. God has great plans for you and He believes in you. So, to have a great attitude, make sure that your expectations line up with what He’s promised you in His Word.
