“This is my commandment: Love each other in the same way I have loved you. There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends." John 15:12–13 (NLT)
Do you make sacrifices in your life for the ones you love? I’m sure you do. But how do you look at those sacrifices?
To make a relationship work, you need to sacrifice from time to time. I’m not saying that a relationship should be a one-way street with only one person doing all the sacrificing. Little sacrifices, going both ways, ensure you’re taking care of each other. For example, you might give up your favourite thing to do one evening and decide instead to do something you don’t like as much, knowing it means a lot to your spouse.
How you think about sacrifices like this is really important because if you approach them incorrectly, you’ll become bitter…and no one wants to come to resent the people they love.
You see, sacrifice is an act of giving up something that’s valued. But it’s because you value something else more. You feel it’s worth giving up the first thing for the second.
If there’s a purpose behind your sacrifice, and you remember that purpose, it’s all worthwhile.
Today, remind yourself of why you do what you do. Remember that those little sacrifices are well worth it when you think about what you’re accomplishing in the end.
