Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior. Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you. Ephesians 4:31–32 (NLT)
When we’re overwhelmed with emotion, it’s important to make good decisions. Especially when it comes to our relationships. In relationships you need to earn trust and respect. You don’t do this by having emotional outbursts. In fact, being able to handle your emotional reactions is the key to navigating the conflicts and issues that happen in every healthy relationship.
In order to handle your emotions God’s way, you need to stay spiritually strong. Getting to know Jesus and His Word is vital if you want to act more intentionally.
That being said, there are other things you can do to keep your emotions in check. Do you realize that you’ve developed habitual ways of dealing with things based on past experiences? When you are overly sensitive to something someone does, it is likely because you are triggering a past response. You need to recognize this.
It’s not up to others to avoid pushing your buttons. It’s up to you to form a new habit when that button is pushed. One great way to overcome old moods and habits is to really study the Bible. As the Word penetrates your heart, it changes you from the inside out. Then, instead of reacting emotionally, you begin to act in a more positive way.
You can handle your emotions in a healthy way every day. When a bad mood sneaks up on you or you’re tempted to react emotionally, ask God for help. He’s ready and willing to help at all times!
