HIS POWER IN YOU

August 29, 2022

And be constantly renewed in the spirit of your mind [having a fresh mental and spiritual attitude]. Ephesians 4:23 (AMPC)

Trying to control negative thinking is kind of like trying to grab a handful of water. It just squirts out everywhere and you end up with a bigger mess.

When I was younger, I thought I could control my negative thinking. I knew that these thoughts weren’t based in truth, so I tried to stop thinking this way. Wow, was I surprised at how hard it was! The harder I tried not to think negatively, the more I did!

For example, the thought kept coming up that I could never do enough. I felt inadequate and believed that nothing I did was ever sufficient to please God. When I tried to stop myself from thinking this way, I had good intentions, but I was going about it all wrong. I needed to take those thoughts captive to the obedience of Christ.

You see, taking your thoughts captive to the obedience of Christ is all about focusing on Jesus. We tend to read the “take your thoughts captive” part and we forget about the “to the obedience of Christ” part. We think that we can control our thoughts through sheer willpower, but it’s not enough on its own.

When you give your life to Christ, He is the one who empowers you to do and think right. It’s about His power in you. So the way to take your thoughts captive is by focusing on Jesus and all He has made available within you. Keep learning and studying what this means and think about it every day. Your thoughts will naturally begin to align with the knowledge of who you really are in Christ.
