HOW TO TAKE UP YOUR SWORD

July 12, 2022

God’s word is an indispensable weapon. In the same way, prayer is essential in this ongoing warfare. Pray hard and long. Pray for your brothers and sisters. Keep your eyes open. Keep each other’s spirits up so that no one falls behind or drops out. Ephesians 6:18 (MSG)

There is nothing more powerful than speaking God’s Word over situations you’re facing or against thoughts attacking your mind.

Years ago, my dad survived a bad crash in a bush plane. Days later, as he and the other survivors boarded another small aircraft to fly out again, he said he could literally feel the fear on the plane. So he simply stood up and said, “Let’s pray.” Then he spoke a short, straight-to-the-point prayer declaring God’s Word on protection and sat back down to several “amens.”

Today, I do the same. If I’m feeling uneasy about the future or worrying about my kids, I’ll begin to declare what the Word of God says.

If it’s for protection, for example, I’ll declare, “Father, Your Word says no weapon formed against my kids shall prosper. A thousand will fall at their side and ten thousand at their right hand, but it will not come near them. Thank You for assigning Your angels to guard and protect them from harm.” (See Psalm 91.)

Ephesians 6:17 calls praying God’s Word “taking up the sword of the Spirit.” A sword can slash through fear and slice open lies. God’s Word is the sword, but prayer pulls it out of the sheath and employs it.

Declaring the Word makes things happen that would otherwise not. I’ve found it also keeps my mind, emotions and focus straight and maintains my confidence in Christ. Is there something or someone you could pray for and declare God’s Word over today?
