Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. Philippians 3:8 (NLT)
Years ago, I went through a phase where I thought that knowing God’s Word or understanding solid Biblical doctrine was sufficient as a believer. Then, in my travels, I began to meet accomplished Greek and Hebrew scholars and incredible theologians. They knew the Word and understood doctrine, yet I was often surprised to discover that some lacked joy, peace or confidence in the miraculous.
I began to realize that there is a vast difference between knowing about Jesus and knowing Jesus.
For example, let’s say you’re convinced you know everything about your favourite actor or athlete through what you’ve read online or in magazines. Now imagine spending actual time together with that person. You would gain a much fuller, more insightful understanding of him or her as a person. You would quickly realize knowing the real deal is a far different experience from the news headlines or online version of that person.
That’s because the more we hang out with someone, the better we usually get to know that person’s character, their personality, what makes them laugh, what they love and what they don’t. The knowing is what brings us closer. Our relationship with God is the same.
Like any healthy, growing relationship, we get to know Jesus best by discovering how much He loves us. The more we get into God’s Word and learn how incredible His love is for us, the more our relationship with Him changes. Our faith and trust in Him starts to build. When you experience His unchanging love for you, you begin to know the real Jesus. Nothing else compares!
