“Self-sacrifice is the way, my way, to finding yourself, your true self.” Matthew 16:24–26 (MSG)
Do you ever ask questions like these: Who am I? What am I going to do for the rest of my life? Am I appreciated here? Is this what I’m supposed to be doing?
The more you ask these questions, the more miserable you’ll become. You see, the more you focus on finding your life, the more it seems to escape you.
The truth is, thinking about yourself too much becomes depressing. I’m not saying it’s the only cause of depression, but living life focused on your own struggles and deficits definitely doesn’t help.
Whereas thinking of others and doing kind things for them leads you to find your true self.
On another note, I think we all could be a little less self-focused when it comes to church. Many people shop around looking for the one that serves them best. You need to find a church with great teaching, inspiring worship and awesome programs for kids and teens. But once you do, realize that those things are not the only reason to go to church. Church is not just about meeting your needs.
Church is also about reaching those who don’t know Jesus! It’s important for your church to share messages that attract people who don’t know Jesus and play the kind of music that reaches the next generation. Sacrificing your personal preferences is worth it for the joy of seeing people come to know Jesus, teens getting saved and kids serving God with passion!
The best attitude to have in every area of life is, “I’m here to give not get.” Approach life that way and you’ll find your true self.
