I pray that your hearts will be flooded with light so that you can understand the confident hope he has given to those he called—his holy people who are his rich and glorious inheritance. Ephesians 1:18 (NLT)
We are three-part beings: spirit, soul and body. But when Adam and Eve left the garden, their spirits lost the presence of God, and they began to function as only two-thirds of a being.
Today as a believer, you are whole and complete with the nature of Christ. But although you have a new nature, your heart needs to catch up. The heart holds your deepest beliefs. These beliefs need to continually be corrected and built on truth—especially your beliefs about your identity.
Unless you do this heart work, old mindsets will hold you back from experiencing the power of God. You may hold limiting ideas about marriage norms, what level of health is possible or how far you can advance in your career. These opinions, if not handled properly, will close your heart to accepting any further truth.
No wonder Paul often talked about the heart in his prayers for believers. In today's verse, he prayed that "your hearts will be flooded with light so that you can understand the confident hope he [God] has given to those he called." In the New King James Version, it describes this process as "the eyes of your understanding being enlightened."
As you spend time in the Word today, ask God to open the eyes of your heart to truth. Let His Word go to work in you—building correct beliefs about who you are in Christ. As your heart comes to agree with your new nature, you'll walk in greater freedom!
