Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world. 1 John 4:4 (ESV)
The Israelites spent over 400 years in slavery before they finally reached the edge of their Promised Land. God had promised them a fertile land that they could call their own. But when they sized up the people they would have to fight to claim that land, the majority of the Israelites backed down.
They just couldn’t envision themselves succeeding.
Although God promised them the land, they couldn’t claim it because they didn’t believe they could. Instead, the majority lived out the rest of their days in the desert wilderness. Only those twenty and younger went on to make the Promised Land their own.
What took place during the forty years the Israelites spent in the wilderness? A new generation was raised without the slave mentality. They grew up believing they were God’s chosen people who could choose their future. And when the time came, they fought and claimed their Promised Land.
What has God promised you in your relationships, health and finances? To live out each of these promises, you need to realize who you are. Just as the Israelites needed to realize who they were before they could have their promise, you need to solve your identity crisis.
Allow God’s Word to redefine you. Realize your true identity! You are not what jealous classmates or frustrated teachers have told you that you are. You are not defined by an illness or disease. You are not what you do and you are not what you have done. You are a child of God, and greater is He who is in you than anything in this world. Believe it!
