Speak Back to the Storm

January 13, 2022

David replied to the Philistine, “You come to me with sword, spear, and javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies—the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. Today the Lord will conquer you, and I will kill you…. This is the Lord’s battle, and he will give you to us!” 1 Samuel 17:45, 47 (NLT)

Storms speak to you. Do you talk back?

The story of David and Goliath found in 1 Samuel 17 shows the power of speaking back to your problems. Goliath, a giant Philistine warrior, shouted obscenities at the opposing Israelite army every day. Seeing David approach him, Goliath “cursed David by the names of his gods” (1 Samuel 17:43, NLT). Let’s talk about that for a minute.

I love science and medicine. I hold respect for those fields, but they come nowhere close to my God. When predictions emerge from “gods” that fuel mass hysteria or predict that we’re all going to die, we need to step back and recognize that that’s not what our God says. Our God is the King of all Kings. If accurate reports come out regarding different diseases, naturally we want to use wisdom. But as believers we are not just people of wisdom—we are people of faith.

I want you to notice that when Goliath cursed David by his gods, David spoke back in the name of his God. David didn’t enter the battle quietly. In fact, he began shouting bold threats of his own back at Goliath. Then David ran onto the battlefield and killed his enemy.

When trials come, know what God’s Word says. As David did, speak the Word confidently and triumphantly over whatever giants you face.
