Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Hebrews 11:1 (NKJV)
Focusing on the past can keep you from stepping out in faith to grab hold of your future.
When you succeed in life, sometimes it can be tempting to stay where you are. Maybe you’ve reached a certain level of success in your career and now you’re just coasting. Or maybe you have a relatively happy marriage so you’re content to just maintain it.
But the thing is, faith is purely future tense. It is the evidence of things hoped for and not yet seen, so it’s all about your future. Maybe you’ve never thought about it this way before, but being satisfied to stay where you are can demonstrate a lack of faith.
I’m not saying that you shouldn’t be grateful for where you are in life, but you were designed for eternal growth. This growth is not supposed to end. Those who stay stagnant often get bored, so they’re easily tempted or distracted from what matters in life. Others, because they have nothing better to do, always seem to be criticizing those who are trying new things.
But that’s not the life God designed for you. You have great potential. In fact, you have so much potential that you’ll never realize it all within this lifetime.
Are you too comfortable? Don’t allow yourself to get complacent in life. You may have done great things and that certainly is reason to celebrate, but God has even more for you. Don’t wait to see if things will change. It’s up to you to use your faith and create your future, so wake up and go for your God-given potential!
