Watch out that you do not lose what we have worked so hard to achieve. 2 John 1:8 (NLT)
Some Christians are afraid of adapting how they talk about their faith or how they do church because they don’t want to jeopardize their beliefs. When they hear the word “contemporary,” they think of the word “compromise.”
In reality, you can easily be contemporary without compromising. Being contemporary is simply adapting yourself and your communication style to the culture that surrounds you. It’s changing the packaging on how you work with Holy Spirit and share Jesus while staying totally committed and unmoving in what you believe. It in no way requires you to compromise on your beliefs and it’s not about trying to change the Gospel.
Liberalism has crept into some churches today. Instead of looking for creative ways to teach the uncompromising truth of God’s Word, these churches avoid teaching that doesn’t seem palatable. As a result, their message becomes increasingly weak and devoid of power to transform people’s lives.
Meanwhile, the fact that the world needs Jesus is nonnegotiable. Jesus died for our sins on a cross. He was raised to life and sits on the right hand of God. If we leave any part of His message out, we strip it of power. Taking pieces out to try to make His message more appealing is unnecessary. We just need to be real and creative in how we share it.
Let’s realize that we are free to change the packaging on how we share Jesus—which the Bible is actually silent on—while we stay totally committed and unmoving in what we believe.
