It is more blessed (makes one happier and more to be envied) to give than to receive. Acts 20:35 (AMPC)
When I turned twelve, I had my worst Christmas ever. I used to get toys, pellet guns and race car tracks for Christmas, but because I was getting older, the gifts changed. Instead, I was given much more practical gifts that were no fun at all. What boy gets excited about getting socks, underwear, pajamas or mittens?
The year I turned fourteen, something different happened. I had started working that year and had money of my own to spend. So when Christmastime came around, I made the decision to buy gifts for my four brothers. This was a big deal because although I loved my brothers, they were little ankle biters who blamed me, the oldest brother, for everything.
This one little decision changed Christmas completely for me. I’ll never forget how much I looked forward to it that year. The joy came back because I had stopped focusing on getting only new socks and underwear. Instead, I couldn’t wait to see my brothers’ faces when they opened their gifts.
When the first one opened his gift, a warmth came over me that felt so good. At fourteen, I had learned the joy of giving, and although I still have my selfish moments, I still love to give to this day!
Giving of yourself changes your entire perspective and it makes life so much more fun. Jesus knew what He was talking about when He said that it’s better to give than to receive.
I’m challenging you today—discover the joy of giving if you haven’t already. And if you have, rediscover it! You won’t be disappointed!
