THINK ABOUT YOUR THOUGHTS

June 23, 2022

For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. Romans 8:6 (ESV)

Your attitude can be your best friend or your worst enemy. How you think about yourself, others and life in general forms the overall attitude you carry with you every day.

Behavioural researcher, author and lecturer Dr. Shad Helmstetter believes that our attitudes either propel us forward toward victories or bring us down into defeat. In his book, What to Say When You Talk to Your Self, he says that attitudes “are the foothold beneath us in every step we take…. Our attitudes make us rich or poor, happy or unhappy, fulfilled or incomplete. They are the single most determining factor in every action we will ever make.”

Some people seem to have a great attitude no matter what. Their default is a “can do” mentality and they expect success. Others struggle to enjoy the day even when things are great. Have you wondered why?

Well, since no one is born with a specific attitude, attitudes must form over time. Because you were not hardwired with any specific attitude—optimistic or pessimistic—you are free to change your attitude. Your attitude was learned, so it can be unlearned.

To change your attitude, look at your thoughts. You don’t have to accept every thought that pops into your mind. As you go about your day, information you gather from your five senses triggers thoughts. However, you can choose which thoughts you entertain.

This week, make it a point to think about what you’re thinking about. Instead of letting your mind wander, intentionally think about what you’re grateful for, and notice how your attitude changes.
