And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God… Ephesians 6:17 (NKJV)
God’s Word is incredibly powerful. Ephesians 6:17 calls it a sword used for battle. Hebrews 4:12 compares it to a two-edged sword that can divide between matters of the soul and matters of the spirit. It exposes, analyzes and judges the thoughts, beliefs and motives of our hearts. But this weapon—God’s Word—can’t benefit you until it gets into your heart.
Simply calling yourself a Christian or falling in line with religious rules isn’t what helps your marriage, finances or well-being. The benefits come when you trade your beliefs for God’s beliefs, your ways for God’s ways and your desires for God’s desires.
How do you do that? By taking time to meditate. When you take a verse and think about what it means for your life, that’s when it can change your deepest beliefs.
As you spend time with God, His nature begins to rub off on you. You become less inclined to slip into destructive ways. You become happier, more creative, more confident, more fulfilled, more energetic and most of all, more loving.
This enables you to be fully present for others—whether it’s with a listening ear, compassion or a less self-focused approach to relationships. It doesn’t mean you never have a bad day. But when one comes, you have a surplus of energy and wisdom to deal with it.
Trade your beliefs for God’s by meditating on the truth of His Word every day. Doing this will be your greatest weapon and a daily source of refreshment!
