My dad was a passionate, fearless man. After growing up, I spent many years pastoring underneath him and my mom. I went with him to jails, reserves and the streets to minister to people who often didn’t want to hear the Gospel. Many of them would say and do nasty things to him. Yet I never saw him back down from the call of God on his life.
He firmly believed that once somebody got to know Jesus Christ, they could enjoy great purpose and do extraordinary exploits for God. So my dad was passionate about getting people free from whatever was holding them back.
If he met anyone who was in bondage—if something was keeping them from rising up and experiencing freedom—he’d tell them, “Jesus wants you to walk in the freedom, liberty and blessing that He has for you. So what are you doing bound up? Let the Spirit of God set you free. All it will take is for you to realize who you are in Jesus Christ, and you can walk right out of it!”
The truth is, many of us have been raised with wrong views of God, Christianity or the church, and as a result, our misbeliefs can often hold us hostage. That’s where my dad was different. He knew God’s plans for our lives exceed our wildest dreams. And he was persuaded that the generations of believers following him would see and do more than he ever had.
If anything is holding you back from believing the same, let today’s verse sink in. The more you know God, the more changes!
