What Are You Rooted In?

February 16, 2022

May Christ through your faith [actually] dwell (settle down, abide, make His permanent home) in your hearts! May you be rooted deep in love and founded securely on love. Ephesians 3:17 (AMPC)

At my childhood home, there was a huge, 50-foot oak tree in the yard. I remember how that tree would sway in powerful storm winds. But its roots went down so deep, nothing could push it down.

What kind of ground are you rooted in? If your roots are in your talents, abilities or people's opinions of you, you're planted in shallow soil. At some point, all of those things will fail you.

Only the love and presence of God gives you security and strength—spiritually, emotionally, physically and relationally. This is the foundation you need for every other relationship in your life.

Take a look at Paul's prayer in Ephesians 3:16-20. Verse 16 (AMPC) says, "May He grant you out of the rich treasury of His glory to be strengthened and reinforced with mighty power in the inner man by the [Holy] Spirit [Himself indwelling your innermost being and personality]."

When you're strengthened in God's love and rooted in what He thinks of you, it heals every emotional wound. You're no longer looking to your spouse, kids or other people to give you a sense of significance. No one else besides God is designed to carry the weight of making you feel good about yourself. Only He can heal you, fill up what's empty inside and give you unshakable confidence.

Meditate on Ephesians 3:16-20 repeatedly and begin to comprehend the dimensions of God's love. Experience His love for you and let it flood your entire being, building a foundation of strength and stability in your relationships.
