But now, since you didn’t believe what I said, you will be silent and unable to speak until the child is born. For my words will certainly be fulfilled at the proper time. Luke 1:20 (NLT)
Our words hold incredible power.
The story of John the Baptist’s father, Zechariah, exemplifies how powerful our words are. According to Luke chapter one, Zechariah and his wife, Elizabeth, were childless seniors. One day, an angel visited Zechariah unexpectedly to deliver amazing news—they were going to become parents!
Even though Zechariah had prayed for a child, he questioned the angel about the chances of this happening. God instantly sealed Zechariah’s mouth, leaving him mute until the promised baby arrived. Why? Because God knew he needed time to align his beliefs and words with God’s promise. God didn’t want Zechariah speaking misbelief.
We should be careful that we too aren’t speaking against God’s promises over our lives (Proverbs 18:21). That’s why it is crucial to guard your heart with His principles (Proverbs 4:23). Work to keep your mind continually renewed in His Word (Romans 12:2).
As you read one of God’s promises for you, begin to meditate on it. Imagine it. Personalize it. Then start speaking that promise aloud in faith boldly. Prophesying over your future involves taking a promise, declaring it is yours in faith, and then walking it out in your daily life.
We take hold of everything God has given us through His promises. (See 2 Peter 1:3-4.) Speaking His promises out loud, convinced they are yours, activates their power in your life.
Don’t give misbelief a voice. Declare God’s promises as yours, regardless of your circumstances. He is faithful and trustworthy.
