So be careful how you live. Don’t live like fools, but like those who are wise. Ephesians 5:15 (NLT)
Some people think that if they miss an opportunity in life, another one won’t come along. But I disagree entirely.
I think opportunities sail past us daily in every area of life. Often, we’re just asleep at the wheel and don’t recognize what God wants to do in and through our lives.
Sometimes it’s because we’re sitting around waiting for God to launch us through the goalposts of life. We want open and shut doors or specific signs—like Gideon asking God to prove Himself with sheep’s wool (Judges 6:36–40). But if we’re too careful, we’ll sit idly by while great opportunities slide past.
Although today’s verse does tell us to live carefully, some people think that means, “Back away and do nothing.” It might surprise you to realize Paul is actually saying the opposite: to be careful how we live so that we don’t live like fools but like wise people.
How do wise people live? They recognize good opportunities and jump on them, whether it’s to share their faith, enter a savvy business deal or give an encouraging word. In fact, Ephesians 5:16–17 (NLT) tells us to “make the most of every opportunity in these evil days. Don’t act thoughtlessly, but understand what the Lord wants you to do.” Verse 17 isn’t saying that we have to understand everything God wants to do with our lives but to appreciate the direction He wants us to go.
Ask God to open your eyes to the incredible opportunities crossing your path every day. Then follow Paul’s advice—live wisely, and rise up to accomplish what God’s called you to do!
