What if I Don’t Like God’s Plans for Me?

July 14, 2021

And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28 (ESV)

Get rid of any thought that God has crummy plans for you. Growing up, I heard teachings from other ministers on God’s will for people’s lives. They spoke about how God might send you to live in a foreign land where you’re miserable or want you to work in a job you hate… but that doing so showed obedience to Christ.

I understand why they were saying it. However, it’s not doctrinally correct once you recognize that God won’t place something in your heart without also giving you a passion for it.

Look at professional football, for example. Pro football players get to play the game they love in front of millions of fans. They get paid well and compete with fellow top athletes who also love the game. They get to train for, eat, sleep and breathe football. It’s their dream life.

On the flip side, most players endure deep bruises, cracked bones, broken fingers, sprained ankles and concussions. They soak in ice baths and ache for weeks after games. Yet football players don’t focus on the negative. They are passionate about the game and living their dream.

When it comes to serving God, we need to hold the same attitude. Focus on the multitude of God’s blessings in your life (Proverbs 10:22). Yes, life has “stuff,” but don’t camp on the negative. We can recognize and overcome our issues while still maintaining the mantra: “I love this life, and God is with me!”

The specific passions God has placed within you are there for a reason. His plans are always for your best and never disappoint.
