What is Your Real Identity?

March 22, 2022

It’s in Christ that we find out who we are and what we are living for. Ephesians 1:11 (MSG)

If you want to live out a great life, you need to develop healthy, Biblical self-esteem.

Good self-esteem doesn’t develop automatically when you give your life to Christ. It’s something you need to build by realizing your true identity—the nature you now have in Christ.

This new identity is going to be the topic of our devotions for the next few days, but before we go any further, it’s important to understand how people develop a poor sense of identity.

If you suffer from low self-esteem, it may have been caused by several factors. First, your parents had a great impact on you, especially in your early years. However, others in authority, such as teachers and coaches, also influenced you greatly.

Friends and peers had a tremendous impact on you as well. In fact, studies show that teenagers’ friends can have more influence over them than their parents. This is why it is so vital that we help our kids choose good friends.

As a result of these influences and the experiences you’ve had in life, you may have developed false ideas about yourself. What you believe controls your life, which is why the Bible teaches us the importance of discovering who we truly are in Christ. You see, who you are may not be who your parents, coach, teacher or friends said you were. It’s time to reject the negative beliefs you have picked up about yourself and start realizing your true identity.

Keep reading over the next few days. God thinks you’re awesome, but do you? As you begin to understand your true identity, you will develop a great sense of self-esteem.
