What’s Your First Line of Defence?

January 16, 2022

If the Spirit of him who raised Christ from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you. Romans 8:11 (ESV)

If you spend any time tuned into the news or following current world events, it’s easy to become fearful.

However, if we aren’t careful to guard our hearts (Proverbs 4:23), we can begin to let fear control our lives. We can start to live small, isolated lives, scared of anything that might cause us harm or death. Of course, we use wisdom to the best of our ability in all circumstances, but living in constant fear doesn’t lengthen our lives.

Perhaps you continuously fear sickness or struggle with chronic health issues. As believers, let’s remember that our first line of defence is understanding that the Spirit of God ignites our immune systems. The same Spirit that raised Christ—whose body had been dead for three days—also lives in us.

The King James version of today’s verse says God’s spirit quickens our mortal bodies. To quicken means to “revive or make alive.” It means to restore it to a former flourishing condition. That’s not referring to our spirit—that’s talking about our physical bodies.

So, what is the key to putting fear in its place? Claim God’s promises aloud in prayer—not by begging or pleading for help from God but by declaring His Word. Stand up and verbalize the end while you’re still at the beginning. Speak to mountains and prophesy your future.

Fearing death is pointless. As believers, we’re all going to be with Jesus at some point. Until then, get up and live. God created you for such a time as this!
