WHEN YOUR BELIEFS WORK AGAINST YOU

September 2, 2022

For only we who believe can enter his rest. Hebrews 4:3 (NLT)

How often do you work on your beliefs? We work at our marriages, careers, raising our kids and eating healthy. Just like all these areas require daily attention, our beliefs do too. Why? Because they largely control our lives. (See Proverbs 4:23.)

Now, when I’m talking about beliefs, I’m not referring to what we believe in our minds. I’m talking about the years of beliefs built up in our hearts.

What we believe deep in our hearts—in our subconscious—constantly affects every area of our lives. For example, perhaps you grew up in a home with a poverty mindset or a fear of sickness. As a kid, if someone repeatedly told you, “Money doesn’t grow on trees around here!” or, “Nobody reaches old age in our family,” your heart may hold misbeliefs against prosperity or healing.

How do we correct wrong heart beliefs that contradict God’s promises? As believers, we labour to enter the rest God says is available to us in Him. (See Hebrews 4:11, KJV.) That means we work to align our heart beliefs with God’s truths. How do we do that? By studying His Word.

Heart beliefs develop through strong emotions or repetition. Labouring to enter God’s rest means repeatedly reminding our hearts that God is trustworthy and keeps His promises.

The more we stake consistent ownership in God’s promises by meditating on them and speaking them aloud, the more those truths begin to drill down into our hearts and uproot our misbeliefs.

Trusting God leads to our ability to rest confidently in His faithfulness, steadfastness, strength and love. Talk about rewarding work!
