Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do. Joshua 1:8 (NLT)
Many people mistakenly think meditation originated from New Age religion, but it’s actually Biblical!
While out shopping one time, I encountered an openly New Age clerk. She spoke excitedly about how she meditated to empty herself to a state of nothingness. I mentioned that I also loved meditating but enjoyed entirely different results. Intrigued, she wanted to know more. So, I took the opportunity to explain Biblical meditation.
Meditating on God’s Word works the opposite way. Instead of emptying yourself of fears and worries, Biblical meditation fills your heart with power and love, which dominates the rest. Then, as those worries and concerns get pushed out, you’re still left with power. No wonder God instructed Joshua to meditate!
Today’s verse even explains how to meditate: spend time learning God’s Word. Speak it. Mull it over in your mind. Biblical meditation is envisioning God’s promises coming to fruition in your life before you see results. Like studying blueprints before building a house, meditation helps you to visualize the end product as reality.
The Word of God provides us with blueprints for what healthy relationships, prosperity, joy and healing look like. Meditating on God’s Word helps us transition from looking at blueprints to beginning to see His promises as reality. From there, we begin to build on that vision until it comes to life. Meditating in God’s Word does the heart good!
